Arthritis in Dogs

When the cushion in the joints breaks down, bones can rub against each other. This is arthritis and it occurs in dogs much the same way as people. While the progression of this disease can worsen its effects, it can also be managed so that it progresses more slowly and joint function remains intact.
Signs of Arthritis in Dogs:
  • Stiffness
  • Soreness
  • Difficulty sitting or standing
  • Decreased activity
  • Decreased appetite
  • Change in sleep cycles
  • Increased irritability
  • Increased vocalization
  • Social withdrawal
  • Lameness
Treatments for arthritis in dogs typically involve a combination of one or more of the following:
  • Proper weight management
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
  • Over-the-counter treatments such as pills or foods with ingredients that relieve arthritic symptoms
  • Diet supplements that help increase joint mobility
When caring for a dog with arthritis, there are often changes to its environment that you can make so that your pet is more comfortable and in less pain. Pet stairs help dogs climb to taller places (such as couches and human beds) without jumping up or down from these places, which can cause further injury and pain. Elevated food and water bowls and orthopedic pet beds can also assist arthritic dogs. Appropriate exercise helps improve mobility and prevent further deterioration too.
